In Illinois, landscapers are not required to hold a state professional license for general lawn care and landscape services. However, if a landscaper is performing work that requires construction permits in Chicago—such as hardscaping, grading, or irrigation installation—the work must comply with city building codes and may require permits from the Chicago Department of Buildings. Always ask your landscaper whether permits are needed for your project.

To verify that a contractor holds any required state licenses or credentials, you can check the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation online portal. For work in Chicago, confirm that any necessary permits have been obtained through the Chicago Department of Buildings, which issues permits for construction work.

Before hiring a landscaper, ask whether your project requires permits, what the timeline and scope of work include, how they handle seasonal changes, and whether they carry insurance. Request references and ask to see examples of similar work they have completed.
