In Illinois, landscapers are not required to hold a state license through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. However, the City of Chicago requires permits for certain construction and landscape work. Before starting a landscape project—especially one involving terrain modification, hardscaping, or major structural elements like garden walls and patios—confirm with the City of Chicago Department of Buildings whether your work needs a permit.

When you contact a landscaper like Don's Custom Landscaping, ask whether permits will be needed for your specific project and whether they will handle the permit application process. This helps avoid costly delays or violations down the road.

For any permit questions, you can contact the City of Chicago Department of Buildings or visit their permit application page. They maintain records of all issued permits and can tell you what is required for your address and scope of work.
