Landscapers in Illinois are not state-licensed through the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation; the state does not regulate the profession. However, the City of Chicago requires contractors to hold a city trade license. You can verify a contractor's license through the Chicago Department of Buildings' License Lookup tool.

Most outdoor work in Chicago requires permits from the Department of Buildings. Projects like decks, patios, fences, and shade structures may fall under building codes that govern construction and safety. Before hiring, ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your specific project and who will handle the permitting process.

When choosing a landscaper, ask about their experience with projects similar to yours, whether their team handles work in-house or subcontracts, and how they manage permits and inspections. Request references and a clear written estimate that outlines the scope, timeline, and cost.
