Interior and exterior painting work in Chicago requires permits from the Department of Buildings for many projects. Before hiring a painter, understand what your project requires. The City of Chicago's Department of Buildings issues permits to ensure construction work meets safety standards. You can check the status of permits and access permit records through the city's website.

Illinois regulates certain contractor activities through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). If your painter holds a trade license or any regulated credential, you can verify their status through IDFPR's online license lookup portal. The department provides tools to check whether an individual or entity is currently licensed.

When planning a painting project, ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your specific work. Discuss how surfaces will be prepared, as proper cleaning and patching affect the final result and longevity of the paint job. Request clarity on timelines and the scope of work before work begins.
