Most painting work in Chicago requires a permit from the Department of Buildings. The type and scope of your project determine whether a permit is needed. Before hiring a painter, check with the City of Chicago Department of Buildings to learn what permits apply to your work. The department's website at chicago.gov lists permit forms and allows you to search issued permits.

In Illinois, painters are regulated by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). You can verify whether a painter holds an active license by using the IDFPR's online license lookup tool at idfpr.illinois.gov. The department also provides a Consumer Portal where you can file complaints and review enforcement actions.

When planning your project, ask your painter whether permits are required and, if so, who will obtain them. Clarify what the scope of work includes and confirm the timeline and expected completion date.
