Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Chicago, Illinois
HVAC work in Illinois requires the contractor to hold a valid license. Start by checking whether a contractor is licensed through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Use the IDFPR's online portal at idfpr.illinois.gov to verify an individual or company license before you hire. This step protects you by confirming the contractor meets state standards.
Most HVAC work in Chicago requires a permit from the Department of Buildings. Permits ensure that installation or repair work meets the Chicago building code and fire code. When you contact a contractor, ask whether a permit is needed for your job and who will pull it—typically the contractor handles this as part of the service.
Before hiring, ask your contractor about their experience with your specific equipment brand and the warranty terms that come with new parts or systems. Clarify whether they offer emergency service and at what hours, and get an estimate in writing. Request references from recent jobs so you can speak with other homeowners about their experience.
How do I verify that an HVAC contractor is licensed in Illinois?
