Illinois law governs HVAC work in Chicago, and the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation oversees contractor licensing. Before you hire, verify that the contractor holds the required license through the state. The City of Chicago also requires permits for heating and ventilation work on occupied buildings; your contractor should handle this as part of the job.

When you call an HVAC contractor, ask whether they hold an active license and what type it is. Legitimate contractors can provide their license information without hesitation. Chicago enforces building codes for HVAC systems, so work should comply with these standards; a professional contractor will know the code requirements for your specific project.

A few key questions protect you during the hiring process. Confirm that the contractor holds a current state license, ask them to pull the required permits before work begins, and request a clear scope of work in writing. These steps ensure the job meets legal requirements and gives you recourse if something goes wrong.
