In Illinois, HVAC contractors must hold a valid license issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Before hiring a contractor, verify their license through the IDFPR's online portal at idfpr.illinois.gov. You can search by business name or individual license number to confirm current, active status and review any enforcement history.

Chicago requires permits for most HVAC work through the Department of Buildings. When you hire a contractor, ask whether a permit is needed for your project—this varies by the scope of work. A reputable contractor will handle permit applications or advise you of requirements upfront. You can check issued permits and contractor licenses through the City of Chicago's online systems.

When requesting a quote, ask the contractor directly about their licensing status, years of experience with your equipment type, and warranty terms. Confirm that they are familiar with Chicago's building codes for mechanical systems. Request references from recent jobs and always get a written estimate before work begins.
