General contracting in Illinois is regulated by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Before hiring any contractor, verify their licensing status through IDFPR's online portal at idfpr.illinois.gov. You can check an individual or entity's license and review any enforcement actions on file.

Construction projects in Chicago typically require permits from the Department of Buildings to ensure work meets code and safety standards. Your contractor should handle or coordinate permit applications as part of the project scope. Always confirm who is responsible for securing permits before signing a contract.

When interviewing a contractor, ask whether the core team will be employees or subcontractors, what warranty or guarantees are offered, and how the jobsite and project schedule will be managed. Request references from recent work and verify their approach to organizing and tracking project details from start to finish.
