General contractors in Illinois must hold a license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds an active license by checking IDFPR's online portal at idfpr.illinois.gov. You can also file a complaint with IDFPR if issues arise during or after your project.

The City of Chicago requires permits for most remodeling work. Your contractor should obtain permits through the Department of Buildings before starting kitchen, bathroom, or basement work. Permits ensure that construction meets local building codes and safety standards. Ask your contractor to confirm which permits apply to your specific project and who will handle the permitting process.

When getting quotes, ask whether your contractor will pull permits, what the timeline is, and whether the project scope includes inspections. Clarify upfront whether they self-perform the work or use subcontractors for specific trades. Request references and examples of completed projects in your neighborhood or of similar scope.
