Hiring a Painter in Norcross, Georgia
Georgia's licensing requirements for painters depend on the scope of work. General contractors in Georgia must hold a license issued by the State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors. Residential painters may need a Residential Basic or Residential Light Commercial license, while commercial work requires a Commercial General Contractor license. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the appropriate license type for your project.
You can check a painter's license status online through the Georgia Secretary of State's verification system (GOALS portal). Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license is active and in good standing. This step protects you by ensuring the contractor is properly registered with the state.
In Gwinnett County, where Norcross is located, most painting work requires a building permit and inspections. The county's Planning and Development department issues permits through the ZIP Portal after plan review and contractor information submission. Interior painting and cabinet refinishing may have different permit requirements than structural work, so check with Gwinnett County Building Services about your specific project before work begins.
