Hiring a Landscaper in Atlanta, Georgia
Georgia requires general contractors and residential contractors to hold a state license. The State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors oversees licensure. Residential license types include Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial; General Contractor licenses have their own categories. You can verify any landscaper's license through the Georgia Secretary of State's online GOALS portal by name or license number.
Before work begins, check whether your project requires a City of Atlanta building permit through the Office of Buildings. Permitted work must comply with the 2024 International Residential Code, 2024 International Building Code, and related Georgia-adopted codes; the City can answer permit questions at (404) 330-6150.
When hiring, ask to see proof of a current state license and confirm it matches the scope of work. If your project involves structural changes, new construction, or HOA requirements, confirm that permits have been obtained and that your contractor understands local code requirements.
How do I verify a landscaper's Georgia state license?
Use the Georgia Secretary of State's online license lookup at https://verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license is current and in good standing. [2]
What license types does Georgia require for landscaping contractors?
Georgia's State Licensing Board issues Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial licenses for residential work, and General Contractor licenses for commercial projects. The license type depends on the scope and scale of the work. [1]
Do I need a permit for landscaping work in Atlanta?
It depends on the scope of your project. The City of Atlanta Office of Buildings issues permits for qualifying work. Contact the Office of Buildings at (404) 330-6150 to determine whether your landscaping project requires a permit. [3]
What should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask to see proof of a current Georgia state license and confirm the license type matches your project scope. If your project requires a permit or involves work affecting your home's structure or utilities, confirm the contractor understands Atlanta building codes and will obtain permits. [1, 3]
