Landscaping contractors in Georgia who perform work exceeding certain thresholds may require licensing as Residential Contractors or General Contractors through the Georgia State Licensing Board. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status using the Georgia Secretary of State's online lookup tool (GOALS portal) by name or license number. You can also file a complaint with the Licensing Division if needed.

If your project includes hardscaping, outdoor structures, or drainage work that involves permitting, Atlanta's Office of Buildings issues building permits and reviews them under the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), 2024 International Building Code (IBC), and other state codes adopted January 1, 2026. Ask your contractor whether permits are required for your scope of work and who will handle permit applications.

When evaluating a landscaper, confirm their experience with your specific project type, ask for references, and ensure they understand any local code requirements or permit needs. Request a written scope and timeline before work begins.
