Before work begins, your contractor must obtain a building permit from the City of Atlanta Office of Buildings. Atlanta now uses the 2024 International Residential Code and related state codes for all new permit applications (updated as of February 1, 2026). Your contractor should handle permit applications and coordinate inspections with the city.

When you hire a contractor, ask whether they hold a Residential Basic or Residential Light Commercial license, request their license number, and verify it through the Georgia Secretary of State. Confirm that they will pull permits and coordinate city inspections—this is standard practice and protects both you and the work.
