Hiring a Plumber in West Palm Beach, Florida
In Florida, plumbers are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Before hiring a plumber, verify that they hold a valid license by searching the DBPR online licensing portal at myfloridalicense.com. The portal allows you to search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type, so you can confirm their credentials and check for any disciplinary history.
Florida's plumbing work is governed by the Florida Building Code. Many plumbing jobs—such as repiping, water heater installation, and sewer-line work—may require permits from your local municipality. Ask your plumber whether permits are needed for your specific project and who will handle the permitting process.
When you call a plumber, ask about their license type (whether they are a certified or registered contractor), their experience with your specific issue, and whether they carry workers' compensation insurance. This helps ensure the job meets code requirements and protects you during the work.
How do I verify a plumber's Florida license?
Visit myfloridalicense.com and use the License Search tool. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type. This will show you their current license status and any disciplinary records. [2]
What license types do plumbers hold in Florida?
Plumbers may be licensed as certified contractors (occupation code begins with C and can work statewide) or registered contractors (occupation code begins with R and can work only in their registered jurisdiction). Ask which type your plumber holds. [1]
Do I need a permit for plumbing work in West Palm Beach?
Many plumbing projects require local permits under the Florida Building Code. Before work begins, ask your plumber whether a permit is required for your job and confirm they will obtain it or coordinate with your local building department. [3]
What should I ask a plumber before hiring them?
Confirm their Florida license, ask about their workers' compensation insurance, discuss whether permits are needed, and verify their experience with your type of repair or installation. This ensures the work meets code and protects you. [1, 3]
