Hiring a General Contractor in West Palm Beach, Florida
In Florida, general contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. There are two main license types: a certified contractor, who can work in any Florida jurisdiction, and a registered contractor, who can work only in the jurisdiction where registered. You can verify a contractor's license status and type through the DBPR online license search at myfloridalicense.com.
Before hiring, search the DBPR database by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license is active and their occupation code (which begins with C for certified or R for registered). This search also shows any disciplinary history. Ask the contractor upfront whether they hold a certified or registered license, as this affects where they can legally work.
Florida projects typically require permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. When you call a general contractor, ask whether they handle permit applications on your behalf and what their process is for code compliance on your specific project scope.
How do I check if a general contractor is licensed in Florida?
Visit the DBPR online license search at myfloridalicense.com. Search by the contractor's name or license number to verify their license is active, see their license type (certified or registered), and view any disciplinary records. [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered general contractor license?
A certified contractor (occupation code beginning with C) can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor (occupation code beginning with R) can work only in the specific jurisdiction where registered. Both must meet the state's competency requirements. [1]
Are permits required for general contractor work in West Palm Beach?
Florida projects typically require permits and must follow the Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor whether they obtain permits and manage code compliance for your project. [3, 4]
What questions should I ask a general contractor before hiring?
Ask about their license type (certified or registered), whether they handle permits, their approach to Florida Building Code compliance, and their scope of work for your project. [1, 3]
