Hiring a General Contractor in West Palm Beach, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) regulates general contractors. Before hiring, check whether your contractor holds a state license and what tier it is. Contractors licensed in Florida are designated as either certified (license code begins with C, valid statewide) or registered (license code begins with R, valid only in the jurisdiction where registered). You can verify a contractor's license status free of charge using the Florida DBPR license search portal.
Most construction work in Florida requires a permit and must comply with the Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your project and who will obtain them. A licensed contractor should be able to guide you through local code requirements and ensure the work meets state standards.
How do I check if a Florida contractor is licensed?
Use the free license search at the Florida DBPR online services portal (myfloridalicense.com). You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. The search will show whether the license is active and whether it is certified (statewide) or registered (jurisdiction-specific). [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor license in Florida?
A certified contractor (license code starting with C) can work anywhere in Florida without meeting local competency requirements. A registered contractor (license code starting with R) can work only in the specific jurisdiction where they registered and must meet that jurisdiction's competency requirements. [1]
Do I need a permit for my construction project?
Most construction work requires a permit under Florida law. Ask your contractor whether a permit is required for your specific project. Your contractor should handle or help coordinate the permitting process. [1]
What building code applies to my project?
Florida construction must comply with the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should be familiar with the current code requirements for your project type and location. You can access the Florida Building Code online or contact the Florida Building Code office at 850-487-1824 with code questions. [3, 4]
