Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates contractors under two main license types: certified and registered. A certified contractor holds a certificate of competency and can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor has met competency requirements for specific jurisdictions only and may contract only in those areas. Before hiring, verify which type of license a contractor holds—it determines where they're legally allowed to work.

You can search for a contractor's license on the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation website (myfloridalicense.com) by name, license number, city, or county. This search confirms whether a contractor is currently licensed and in good standing. In Palm Beach County, the Building Division's Permit Center oversees permit applications and contractor compliance.

Most renovation, remodeling, and construction work requires a building permit from Palm Beach County. The county's Building Division office is located at 2300 N. Jog Road, West Palm Beach, and is open Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM. Ask your contractor whether your project needs a permit and whether they'll handle the application. The Florida Building Code governs all construction work, so ask your contractor how they stay current with code requirements.
