Hiring a General Contractor in West Palm Beach, Florida
In Florida, general contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds a current license. A certified contractor (occupation code beginning with C) can work statewide, while a registered contractor (code beginning with R) is limited to specific jurisdictions. You can search the Florida DBPR license database by the contractor's name, license number, or city to confirm their status and scope of work.
Most remodeling and repair work in West Palm Beach requires a permit from your local building authority. When you contact a general contractor, ask whether they handle permitting as part of the project or if you'll manage it separately. This affects both timeline and cost. The contractor should also be familiar with the Florida Building Code, which governs construction standards in the state.
How do I verify a general contractor's Florida license?
Go to the Florida DBPR license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type. Confirm the license is current and check the occupation code—it will begin with C (certified) or R (registered). [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor (C code) holds a statewide certificate of competency and can contract anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor (R code) has registered in a specific jurisdiction and may only work there. [1]
Do I need a permit for remodeling work in West Palm Beach?
Most remodeling and repair projects require a permit from the local building authority in West Palm Beach. Ask your contractor whether they obtain permits as part of their service or if you will handle it. [1, 3]
What should I ask a general contractor before hiring?
Ask whether they are certified or registered under Florida law, whether they handle permitting, and confirm their familiarity with the Florida Building Code. Request references and clarify which work they perform themselves versus subcontract. [1]
