Hiring a Landscaper in Tallahassee, Florida
In Florida, landscapers who work on construction projects must understand the state's contractor licensing system. The Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board oversees and regulates the construction trade. Contractors are classified as either certified or registered—certified contractors can work anywhere in the state, while registered contractors may only work in the jurisdictions where they registered. Before hiring, verify which type of license your contractor holds, as this affects their scope of work and authority.
All landscapers working on projects that fall under Florida's construction code must comply with state regulations. The Florida Building Code sets standards for work that involves structures, improvements to real estate, or related construction. Understanding whether your project requires a permit or falls under code requirements can help you ask the right questions when getting a bid.
When hiring a landscaper, ask about their license status and verify it through the state. You should also confirm whether your project requires a permit in Tallahassee and what code provisions may apply. Request references and clarify the scope of work in writing before work begins.
How do I verify a landscaper's Florida contractor license?
You can search the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation online license portal at myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp. Use the search options to look up a contractor by name, license number, city, or license type. This official search will show whether the contractor is licensed and in good standing. [2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a certificate of competency from the state and can work in any jurisdiction in Florida without meeting local competency requirements. A registered contractor has met competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may only work in that location. Certified contractors are designated by an occupation code starting with 'C', while registered contractors' codes start with 'R'. [1]
Do landscaping projects in Tallahassee require a building permit?
Whether a permit is required depends on the scope of your landscaping project and local code. For detailed information about permit requirements specific to your project, contact the Florida Building Code Online at 850-487-1824 or visit floridabuilding.org. They can advise you on whether your work falls under code jurisdiction. [3, 4]
What should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask the landscaper about their license type (certified or registered), and request they provide their license number so you can verify it. Clarify whether your project requires a permit and confirm they understand any applicable Florida Building Code requirements. Get a detailed written scope of work and timeline before agreeing to the job. [1, 2]
What is the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board?
The Construction Industry Licensing Board, part of the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, is responsible for licensing and regulating the construction industry. They review applications for licensure, handle disciplinary cases, and set rules for contractors. The board ensures contractors meet competency standards and comply with state law. [1]
