In Florida, landscaping contractors who perform construction work that requires permits may need to be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). The board regulates contractors based on their scope of work. Before hiring, verify whether a contractor holds a license by checking the official license search at MyFloridaLicense.com.

You can search for a contractor by name, license number, city, or license type on the state portal. This helps ensure the contractor is registered or certified to work in Tallahassee. Keep in mind that certain landscape work—such as structural installation or hardscaping—may fall under code requirements, so asking about licensing and permits is a smart first step.

When evaluating landscapers, ask whether their work requires permits under the Florida Building Code and who will handle permit applications. Clarify whether they are a registered contractor (limited to Tallahassee) or a certified contractor (able to work statewide). Discuss your project scope so you understand what regulations apply.
