Florida requires painters who contract for compensation to hold a state license issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Before hiring any painter, verify their license status through the official Florida license search at MyFloridaLicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This step protects you: an unlicensed contractor operating in Florida is breaking a felony statute, and if an uninsured worker is injured on your job, you as the homeowner can face a lawsuit.

Painters in Florida are classified as contractors, and the state distinguishes between certified contractors (who can work statewide) and registered contractors (limited to specific jurisdictions). Make sure the painter you hire holds a current, active license for your county or area. You can also check the Construction Policy Tracking Database to verify workers' compensation coverage, which the state tracks automatically.

When requesting estimates, ask the painter about their experience with your specific project type—interior, exterior, or commercial work—and confirm they understand any local building code requirements that may apply to your job. Request references and ask how they handle project timelines and communication during the work.
