In Florida, painting contractors typically fall under the Construction Industry Licensing Board's regulation. Before hiring, verify that your painter holds the proper state license. You can search for an active license through the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation online at myfloridalicense.com using the contractor's name or license number. This step confirms they are in good standing.

Jacksonville enforces the Florida Building Code (8th Edition, 2023). For most residential interior and exterior painting, permits are not always required, but some projects—particularly exterior work on certain structures or commercial jobs—may need one. Contact the City of Jacksonville Building Inspection Division at 904-255-8500 or visit JaxEPICS.coj.net to determine if your project requires a permit. The division is open Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 4 PM.

When you speak with a painter, ask about their license status, experience with your type of project, and whether they handle permitting if needed. Request references and a written scope of work that includes prep details, paint brands, and timeline. A clear estimate protects both you and the contractor.
