Hiring a Painter in Jacksonville, Florida
Painting contractors in Florida are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). Before hiring, verify that your painter holds the correct state license. Florida distinguishes between certified contractors, who hold a certificate of competency and may work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who have met competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may contract only there. You can search for an active license on the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation website at myfloridalicense.com.
In Jacksonville, the Building Inspection Division enforces the Florida Building Code 8th Edition (2023). Most painting work does not require a permit, but structural or code-related changes may. When contacting a painter, ask whether permits are needed for your specific project. The Building Inspection Division in Jacksonville can answer questions about permitting at 904-255-8500 or BIDDocuments@coj.net, and their office is located at 214 North Hogan Street, second floor, open Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 4 PM.
How do I check if a painter is licensed in Florida?
Visit the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the painter's name, license number, or city. A licensed contractor will have either a certified or registered license designation. [1, 2]
Do I need a permit for painting work in Jacksonville?
Most interior and exterior painting does not require a permit. However, if the work involves structural changes or modifications that affect building code compliance, a permit may be required. Ask your painter or contact the Jacksonville Building Inspection Division at 904-255-8500 to confirm for your project. [5]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate of competency and may work in any Florida jurisdiction without meeting local requirements. A registered contractor has met competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may only contract in that area. Both are regulated by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board. [1]
