In Florida, painters who contract directly with the public for work on residential or commercial structures must hold a state license issued by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) Construction Industry Licensing Board. Contractors are registered or certified; registered painters may work only in specified jurisdictions, while certified contractors may work anywhere in the state. Before you hire, verify the contractor's license status through the DBPR online search portal.

You can look up any Florida contractor's license on the DBPR website at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp by searching by name, license number, city, or license type. This search confirms whether the painter holds an active, valid license and reveals any disciplinary history. Ask the painter for their license number and check it yourself.

Many painting projects in Florida require permits and must meet the Florida Building Code. Your painter should be familiar with local code requirements and permit procedures for your project type—whether interior, exterior, or commercial. Before signing, ask the painter whether the work needs a permit and who will handle the application and inspections.
