Hiring a Landscaper in Fort Myers, Florida
In Florida, landscape contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The board oversees licensing, sets standards, and handles disciplinary matters for the construction industry. Whether you need a landscape contractor for design, installation, or materials, understanding Florida's licensing rules will help you hire the right professional.
Contractors in Florida fall into two main categories: certified contractors, who hold a state certificate and can work anywhere in Florida, and registered contractors, who register with the state for specific jurisdictions and may only contract in those areas. You can verify any contractor's status through the DBPR's online license search tool, which lets you search by name, license number, city, or license type. This is a free public service.
When you contact a landscape contractor in Fort Myers, ask whether they hold a current state license and what type (certified or registered). For larger projects—especially those involving building or structural changes—check whether permits are required under the Florida Building Code. A professional contractor will know the local code requirements and can guide you through the process.
How do I verify a landscape contractor's license in Florida?
Visit the Florida DBPR website at myfloridalicense.com and use their license search tool. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type. This free service shows whether the license is current and active. [1, 2]
What types of landscape contractor licenses does Florida issue?
Florida issues certified contractor licenses (for work anywhere in the state) and registered contractor licenses (for work in specific jurisdictions only). Certified licenses begin with the letter C; registered licenses begin with R. A contractor may also hold specialty licenses for certain work like swimming pool construction. [1]
Do I need a permit for landscape work in Fort Myers?
Permit requirements depend on the scope of your project. The Florida Building Code governs construction and structural work. Before hiring a contractor, discuss your project—whether it involves grading, hardscaping, irrigation, or other features—and ask whether a permit will be needed. [3, 4]
What should I ask a landscape contractor before hiring?
Ask whether they hold a current state license, whether it is certified or registered, and for their license number. Also discuss whether your project requires permits or inspections under the Florida Building Code, and ask for references from recent work. [1, 2, 3]
