Hiring a Landscaper in Fort Myers, Florida
Landscaping work in Florida is regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Many landscaping projects require a contractor to hold a state license. Before hiring, verify that your contractor is licensed for the scope of work you need—the state licensing system allows you to search by name, license number, or license type.
Florida contractors operate either as certified contractors, who can work anywhere in the state, or as registered contractors, who are limited to specific jurisdictions. When you contact a landscaper, ask whether their license covers Fort Myers and the type of work you're planning. The DBPR license search portal is free and available online.
Landscaping projects that involve significant construction, earthwork, or structural changes may require building permits and compliance with the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should be familiar with local permit requirements for your specific project.
How do I check if a landscaper is licensed in Florida?
Use the free license search portal on the Florida DBPR website (myfloridalicense.com). You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. The search tells you whether they are licensed and their scope of work. [1, 2]
What types of contractor licenses does Florida issue?
Florida issues certified contractor licenses (occupation code starting with C), which allow work anywhere in the state, and registered contractor licenses (occupation code starting with R), which are limited to specific jurisdictions. Ask your contractor which type they hold. [1]
Do landscaping projects need permits?
Many landscaping projects require permits, especially those involving significant construction or earthwork. Your contractor should know what permits apply to your project and help you understand the requirements. [3]
What should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Confirm their license number and verify it on the DBPR website. Ask whether their license covers Fort Myers and the specific work you need. Discuss permits and any building-code requirements for your project. [1, 2]
