Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Fort Myers, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates HVAC contractors through the Department of Business & Professional Regulation. Contractors must hold a valid state license to work legally in the state. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license number on the DBPR online search portal at myfloridalicense.com. HVAC contractors in Florida are issued licenses beginning with either C (certified, valid statewide) or R (registered, valid only in specific jurisdictions).
When you call an HVAC contractor, ask to see their license and confirm it matches one of the numbers on the DBPR search. Florida requires HVAC work to comply with the Florida Building Code. Most repairs and replacements of air-conditioning or heating systems in residential homes do not require a separate building permit, but some work may. Your contractor should advise you if a permit is needed for your project.
How do I look up an HVAC contractor's Florida license?
Visit the Florida DBPR license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type. This confirms the license is active and in good standing. [2]
What license types do HVAC contractors hold in Florida?
HVAC contractors hold either a certified license (beginning with C, valid statewide) or a registered license (beginning with R, valid only in the jurisdiction where registered). Ask your contractor which type they hold. [1]
Do I need a permit for HVAC work in Fort Myers?
It depends on the scope of work. Some air-conditioning and heating repairs or replacements may not require a permit, but others do. Your contractor should inform you whether a permit is required for your specific project and obtain it if needed. [3, 4]
