Hiring a General Contractor in Boca Raton, Florida
In Florida, general contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the appropriate license type. Certified contractors (designation begins with 'C') may contract anywhere in Florida; registered contractors (designation begins with 'R') may work only in their registered jurisdiction. You can search for a contractor's license status and history online through the DBPR licensing portal at myfloridalicense.com.
When planning a remodeling project, check whether your contractor will handle all work directly or use subcontractors, and clarify which trades they perform in-house. Ask your contractor about permit requirements for your specific project, as permit scope varies by jurisdiction and project type. Be sure the contractor is familiar with the Florida Building Code requirements that apply to your work.
How do I verify a Florida contractor's license?
Visit the DBPR license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license status and scope of work. [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor (license code begins with 'C') has passed a statewide exam and may contract anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor (license code begins with 'R') has met requirements in a specific jurisdiction and may work only there. [1]
Do I need a permit for my remodeling project?
Permit requirements depend on the scope and location of your project. Discuss permit needs with your contractor early; they should be familiar with local and Florida Building Code requirements for your work. [3, 4]
What should I ask a general contractor about how they handle their work?
Ask whether the contractor will perform all work directly or hire subcontractors, and which specific trades they handle in-house. This helps you understand how the project will be managed and executed. [1]
