Hiring a General Contractor in Boca Raton, Florida
In Florida, general contractors must be licensed through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Contractors are classified as either certified or registered. A certified contractor holds a certificate of competency and can work anywhere in the state; a registered contractor is licensed only for the specific jurisdiction where they registered. You can verify a contractor's license status, license type, and any disciplinary history by searching the DBPR online license database at myfloridalicense.com.
Before hiring a contractor, confirm their current license through the DBPR search tool. Ask whether they hold a certified (C) or registered (R) license—this tells you their scope and geographic authority. For any work that triggers building permits in Boca Raton, your contractor should be familiar with the Florida Building Code and local permitting requirements.
How do I verify a Florida contractor's license?
Visit myfloridalicense.com and use the online license search. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. The search shows their license type, status, and any disciplinary records. [2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor (license code starting with C) holds a certificate of competency and can work in any Florida jurisdiction. A registered contractor (license code starting with R) is licensed only for the specific jurisdiction where they registered. [1]
Will my project need permits in Boca Raton?
That depends on the scope of work. Your contractor should advise you on permit requirements for your specific project. The Florida Building Code governs construction standards; the local building official can clarify whether permits apply to your job. [3, 4]
What should I ask a contractor before hiring?
Confirm their current DBPR license, license type (certified or registered), and that they understand your local building code and permit requirements. Ask whether they self-perform work or subcontract portions of the project. [1, 2]
