Hiring a General Contractor in Boca Raton, Florida
In Florida, general contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The board oversees two main contractor types: certified contractors, who hold a state certificate of competency and may work in any Florida jurisdiction, and registered contractors, who have met competency requirements for specific jurisdictions only. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license type and whether it permits work in your area.
You can check a contractor's license status and history through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's online license search portal. Search by the contractor's name, license number, or city to confirm their current standing and any disciplinary records. This step protects you by confirming the contractor is active and in good standing.
Florida requires permits and compliance with the Florida Building Code for most construction work. Your contractor should obtain necessary permits before starting—this is their responsibility, not yours. Ask your contractor about permit requirements for your specific project and how they handle code compliance.
What are the two main license types for general contractors in Florida?
