Hiring a General Contractor in Boca Raton, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) regulates general contractors in the state. You can verify any contractor's license through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search at myfloridalicense.com. A contractor must hold either a certified license (beginning with the letter C) allowing work statewide, or a registered license (beginning with R) valid only in specific jurisdictions.
When hiring a general contractor, ask to see their license and confirm it matches their scope of work. Florida's licensing structure ensures contractors are qualified for the projects they undertake—whether remodeling, additions, repairs, demolition, or new construction. Before work begins, verify that the contractor carries the appropriate coverage and understands local permit and building code requirements for your project type.
How do I verify a contractor's Florida license?
Use the DBPR license search tool at myfloridasicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This confirms the license is active and what type of work they are authorized to perform. [2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor license?
A certified contractor (license code starting with C) may work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor (license code starting with R) may only work in the specific jurisdiction where they registered. Certified licenses show broader qualification. [1]
What should I ask a contractor before hiring?
Ask to see their active Florida license, confirm the license type and number match the project scope, inquire about workers' compensation coverage, and discuss whether they will obtain permits and follow local building codes for your work. [1]
