Hiring a Landscaper in Los Angeles, California
In California, landscaping contractors must hold a state license. Nitrogen Landscapes holds state license C-27 #1143642 — the C-27 classification covers landscaping contractors. Before you hire any landscaper, verify their license through the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) online license checker. You can search by license number or business name to confirm the license is active and check for any complaints.
Whether your project needs a building permit depends on its scope and location. City and county building departments set permit rules, which vary widely. Simple maintenance and planting typically do not require permits, but larger projects like irrigation system installation or grading may. Contact the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety to learn what's required for your specific work.
When you call a landscaper, ask about their experience with your type of project — whether it's one-time design work, ongoing maintenance, or specialized services like irrigation or stormwater management. Ask for references, confirm they carry current licensing, and make sure the contract clearly describes the work, timeline, and cost.
What license do landscapers need in California?
Landscapers in California must hold a C-27 Landscaping Contractor license from the California Contractors State License Board. Some specialized tree work may fall under the C-49 Tree and Palm Contractor license. [1]
How do I check a landscaper's license?
Go to the CSLB online license checker at cslb.ca.gov and search by the contractor's license number or business name. The search will show the license status and any complaint history. [4]
Do I need a building permit for landscaping work?
It depends on the project. California Building Standards Code requires a permit for most construction work, but rules vary by city and county. Contact your local building department — in Los Angeles, that's the Department of Building and Safety — to find out what's needed for your specific project. [3, 5]
What questions should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask about their experience with projects like yours, request references, verify their current license, understand the scope of work and timeline, and get a detailed contract that covers materials, labor, and cost. [2]
