In California, landscapers typically hold a C-27 Landscaping Contractor license from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Before starting landscape work, check with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety to determine whether your project requires a building permit. Code requirements vary by location within the city, so it's important to confirm permit needs with your local building department.

To verify a contractor's license status before hiring, use the CSLB's online license check tool at cslb.ca.gov. You can search by license number (shown on their pocket license), business name, or the contractor's name. This step helps you confirm their current standing and any complaint disclosure information.

When selecting a landscaper, ask whether their work requires permits and whether they will obtain them on your behalf. Clear communication about permit responsibility and project scope helps avoid delays and ensures the work meets local building code requirements.
