Before calling any HVAC contractor in South Carolina, verify that they hold a valid license. The South Carolina Contractor's Licensing Board regulates mechanical contractors and posts a searchable licensee list on its website at https://llr.sc.gov/clb/.

Start with a hiring checklist: confirm the contractor is licensed, ask what brands and equipment they install, request references or reviews, clarify pricing and financing options, and verify availability for your timeline. For HVAC work, South Carolina building codes apply to new installations and replacements, so a licensed contractor should understand local requirements.

When you call, discuss whether permits are required for your job—installation and replacement work typically requires permits and inspections. Ask the contractor how they handle permitting and what the process looks like for your specific repair or install.
