In New York City, landscaping work often requires permits, particularly for significant projects involving grading, drainage, hardscaping, or property alteration. Before starting, check with the NYC Department of Buildings to understand whether your project needs approval. The department maintains a list of license types and can clarify permit requirements for your scope of work.

If your landscaper holds a license relevant to the project—such as a site safety manager or a skilled-trade license—you can verify it through the NYC Department of Buildings online system. The department processes license applications, renewals, and disciplinary records through its official channels.

When hiring a landscaper, ask whether permits are required for your specific project and whether the contractor will handle or coordinate permitting. Confirm that the business carries appropriate insurance, especially for work involving drainage, grading, or hardscaping that may affect property structure or utilities.
