In New York City, landscaping work may fall under the Department of Buildings' licensing requirements depending on the scope and nature of the project. The DOB oversees licensing for construction and design professionals in the city. If you are hiring a landscaper for work that requires a city license, you can verify their status through the DOB's licensing system.

When you contact a landscaper like A & J Landscaping, it is reasonable to ask whether the work you have in mind requires a DOB license or permit. Some landscape projects—particularly those involving significant grading, drainage, or hardscaping—may trigger building code or permit requirements in New York City. A reputable contractor will be transparent about what permits and approvals may be needed.

Before hiring, request proof of any required licenses or permits for your project and ask whether the contractor carries appropriate insurance. The DOB maintains records of licensed professionals, which you can check for verification. Getting a free consultation, as A & J Landscaping offers, is a good opportunity to discuss the scope of work and any regulatory requirements that apply.
