General contractors in New York City must hold a license from the NYC Department of Buildings. You can verify any contractor's license status online through the Department of Buildings' licensing database. The city maintains records of active licenses, renewals, and disciplinary actions, so checking before you hire is a straightforward way to confirm the business is properly registered.

When you contact a general contractor, ask whether they will self-perform the work or use subcontractors, and request proof of current insurance and bonding. In New York City, permits are typically required for most construction work, and your contractor should guide you through the permitting process with the Department of Buildings. Building codes in the city are strict, so work must meet all applicable standards—a licensed contractor will know these requirements.
