Hiring a Painter in Oak Park, Illinois
In Illinois, painters are not required to hold a state license to work on residential projects. However, you can verify any license or complaint history through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) online portal. Searching there will show whether a painter or painting company holds an active license in the state and reveal any enforcement actions on record.
Before you hire, ask your painter whether your project requires a permit and confirm compliance with local building codes. The scope of work—whether interior, exterior, or structural—may determine permit and inspection needs. A reputable painter will clarify these requirements upfront and coordinate any necessary approvals.
When evaluating painters, ask about their approach to prep work, crew experience, and how they handle cleanup and coordination with other contractors. Request references and check recent reviews. These details matter more than licensing in states where painting is unregulated.
How do I check if a painter is licensed in Illinois?
Visit the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) online portal at https://idfpr.illinois.gov/ to search for an active license or review any enforcement actions. [1]
Do painters in Illinois need a state license?
Painting is not a regulated profession in Illinois, so a state license is not required for residential work. However, IDFPR can show you whether a painter holds any other professional credentials or has a complaint history. [1]
Will my painting project need a permit?
Permit requirements depend on the scope of work and local Oak Park codes. Ask your painter whether your specific project requires a permit and building-code approval before work begins. [1]
What should I ask a painter before hiring?
Ask about their prep process, crew experience, cleanup practices, and how they coordinate with other trades if your home has multiple projects underway. Request references from recent jobs. [1]
How do I file a complaint if something goes wrong?
You can file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation online at https://idfpr.illinois.gov/ or call 1 (888) 473-4858. [1]
