In Illinois, painting contractors are not required to hold a state license. However, if you hire a contractor for work that includes general contracting or construction services alongside painting, those portions may be subject to state or local regulations. Before hiring, you can verify whether a contractor holds any licenses through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's online license lookup tool.

When evaluating a painter, ask about their approach to preparation, the quality of materials they use, and how they handle the scope of your project. Since painting outcomes depend heavily on prep work and product choice, understanding their process helps you make an informed decision. Check references and reviews to confirm their work quality.

Many municipalities require permits for certain painting or construction work. Contact your local Elmwood Park building department to confirm whether your project needs a permit before work begins. A reputable contractor should be familiar with local requirements and help you understand what applies to your job.
