In Illinois, plumbers must be licensed. You can verify a plumber's license through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) online portal at idfpr.illinois.gov. Look up the individual plumber or company name to confirm their license is active and in good standing.

Most plumbing work in Chicago requires a permit from the Department of Buildings. The city issues permits to ensure construction work meets safety and code standards. When you call a plumber, ask whether they handle permits or if you need to apply separately.

Before hiring, ask your plumber about their experience with your specific issue—whether it's a leak, drain problem, water heater, or sewer line—and confirm they are comfortable with any brands or fixtures you have. Request references if the job is substantial.
