In Illinois, painting contractors do not require a state license through the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. However, the City of Chicago requires painters to hold a trade license. Before hiring a painter, you can check their license status through the City of Chicago's Department of Buildings License Lookup tool.

Most painting work in Chicago will require a permit from the Department of Buildings. The type and scope of your project determine permit requirements—interior repaints may differ from exterior work or structural changes. Ask your painter whether your project needs a permit and confirm they will obtain it or guide you on how to do so.

When hiring a painter, ask whether they have a current City of Chicago trade license and can provide the license number. Also ask what prep work they perform, what paint brands they use, and how they handle permits for your specific job. Request references and clarify the project timeline and payment terms before work begins.
