Hiring a General Contractor in Chicago, Illinois
General contractors in Illinois must hold a license issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). You can verify a contractor's license status by visiting the IDFPR online portal at idfpr.illinois.gov or calling 1-888-473-4858.
Most remodeling and renovation work in Chicago requires a permit from the Department of Buildings. This applies to kitchens, bathrooms, whole house renovations, and commercial buildouts. Permits ensure work meets city building codes and safety standards. Your contractor should handle or coordinate permits as part of the project scope.
Before hiring, ask whether the contractor holds the required state license, whether the project will need permits, and how costs and timeline are managed. Clarify what work the contractor self-performs versus subcontracts, and get the scope and budget in writing.
How do I check if a general contractor is licensed in Illinois?
Visit the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) website at idfpr.illinois.gov and use their online portal to look up the contractor's license. You can also call 1-888-473-4858. [1]
What permits does a kitchen or bathroom remodel need in Chicago?
Most kitchen and bathroom remodels require a permit from the City of Chicago Department of Buildings. Permits ensure the work meets building codes. Check the Department of Buildings website at chicago.gov or contact them to confirm permit requirements for your specific project. [2]
Who is responsible for obtaining permits?
Your contractor typically obtains or coordinates permits as part of the project. Clarify this in your contract before work begins. [2]
What should I ask a general contractor before hiring?
Ask whether they hold a current Illinois license, whether the project requires permits, what the full scope and budget are, and what portions of work they self-perform versus subcontract. [1, 2]
