Hiring an Electrician in Chicago, Illinois
In Illinois, electricians must hold a state license issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). You can verify whether an electrician holds a current, active license by using IDFPR's online license lookup tool at idfpr.illinois.gov. Before hiring, confirm that your electrician's license is in good standing and covers the type of work you need.
Most electrical work in Chicago requires a permit from the Department of Buildings. Your electrician should be familiar with permit requirements and able to guide you through the process. Always ask whether a permit is needed for your specific job—unpermitted work can create safety and legal problems when you sell or refinance your home.
When you call an electrician, ask whether they are licensed in Illinois, what types of work they specialize in, and whether they handle residential jobs. Clarify permit responsibility upfront so you know what to expect before work begins.
How do I check an Illinois electrician's license?
Visit idfpr.illinois.gov and use the online license lookup tool. Enter the electrician's name or license number to verify their active status. [1]
Do I need a permit for electrical work in Chicago?
Most electrical work requires a permit from the City of Chicago Department of Buildings. Ask your electrician which projects need permits before work starts. [2]
What should I ask an electrician before hiring?
Confirm they hold a current Illinois electrician license, clarify whether permits are needed for your work, and ask about their experience with residential jobs. [1, 2]
