Georgia requires plumbers to hold a state license issued by the Georgia Secretary of State's Division of Master and Journeyman Plumbers. Only licensed Master Plumbers may operate a plumbing business; Journeyman Plumbers work under them. A Journeyman Plumber needs at least one year of plumbing experience. A Master Plumber—the higher license level—requires a minimum of five years' experience, with at least two of those years as a licensed Journeyman. Class I Master Plumbers can work on single-family homes and commercial buildings up to 10,000 square feet; Class II Master Plumbers have no restrictions.

Before hiring, verify the plumber's license through the Georgia Secretary of State's online GOALS system, where you can search by name or license number. Licensed plumbers must complete 4 hours of continuing education annually. Georgia has no reciprocity with other states, so an out-of-state license does not qualify.
