Georgia's painting and general contracting work is regulated by the Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors. Painters who perform general contracting work may hold a Residential Basic or Residential Light Commercial license. Before hiring, you can verify any contractor's license status through the Georgia Secretary of State's online portal, which allows lookups by business name or license number. This step helps ensure the business is properly licensed to operate in your area.

Licensing requirements in Georgia include proof of continuing education for renewal, tracked through CE Broker. Licenses expire on June 30 each year, with a late renewal period from July 1 to August 15. When you contact a painter, ask about their license type and whether they hold the appropriate credential for your project's scope.

If you have concerns about a painter's work or conduct, you can file a complaint with the Georgia State Licensing Board's Licensing Division. Getting a written estimate before work begins—whether on-site, remote, or from photos—helps clarify scope and cost upfront.
