Hiring a Landscaper in Sugar Hill, Georgia
If your landscaping project includes hardscaping, pools, spas, or other structural improvements, permit requirements may apply. Georgia's State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors oversees licensing for residential and general contractors. Depending on the scope of work, a contractor may need a Residential Basic or Residential Light Commercial license, or a Commercial General Contractor license.
Before hiring, verify that a contractor holds the appropriate license. The Georgia Secretary of State provides a free online lookup tool (GOALS portal) where you can search for a professional license by the contractor's name or license number. This is your first step in confirming the business is properly licensed to do the work you need.
When obtaining a free estimate, ask the contractor about permits required for your specific project and who will handle the permitting process. Clarify the scope of work and whether the company will pull permits or if that responsibility falls to you.
What license types do Georgia landscaping contractors need?
Contractors performing landscape work that includes hardscaping, pools, spas, or other structural improvements may need licensing from Georgia's State Licensing Board. License types include Residential Basic, Residential Light Commercial, or Commercial General Contractor, depending on the project scope and the contractor's business structure. [1]
How can I verify a Georgia landscaper's license?
Use the Georgia Secretary of State's online license verification tool (GOALS portal) at verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license is current and in good standing. [2]
Will I need a permit for my landscape project?
Permit requirements depend on the scope of work. Hardscape, pools, spas, and water features often require permits. Ask your contractor during the estimate which permits apply to your project and clarify whether the contractor will handle the permitting process. [1]
What should I ask about licensing when I call for an estimate?
Ask whether the contractor holds a current Georgia license for the type of work you need, and request the license number so you can verify it through the state portal. Also clarify who is responsible for obtaining any required permits. [1, 2]
