In Georgia, general contractors and residential contractors are regulated by the State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors. Before hiring any contractor, verify that they hold the appropriate license for your project type. You can look up a contractor's license status online through the Georgia Secretary of State's GOALS verification portal by the contractor's name or license number.

When you contact a contractor, ask whether they hold a current license and what type (Residential Basic, Residential Light Commercial, or General Contractor). Licensed contractors must maintain continuing education credentials tracked through CE Broker for license renewals. State licenses expire June 30 each year; late renewals are accepted July 1 to August 15.

If you have concerns about a contractor's work or conduct, you can file a complaint with the Licensing Division of the State Licensing Board.
