Landscapers in Georgia may hold a state contractor license depending on the scope of their work. The Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors oversees General Contractor and Residential Contractor licenses. Not all landscaping work requires a state license, but larger projects involving grading, earthwork, or hardscaping may fall under contractor licensing rules. Verify whether your project scope requires a licensed contractor before hiring.

You can check whether a Georgia contractor holds a current state license using the Secretary of State's online verification system (GOALS portal) by searching the business or owner name and license number. This helps confirm credentials before signing a contract.

Before you hire, ask the landscaper whether your project requires a state contractor license and whether they hold one. Ask also about insurance, references from similar projects, and whether a building permit is needed—requirements vary by county and project type.
