Georgia requires licensure for contractors undertaking certain work. Residential and commercial landscape projects may fall under the state's licensing requirements depending on scope. The Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors oversees Residential Basic, Residential Light Commercial, and Commercial General Contractor licenses. Before hiring, verify that any contractor you're considering holds the appropriate license for your project type.

You can check a contractor's license status free online through the Georgia Secretary of State's license verification system at verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their credentials are current. This step protects you and ensures the business is operating legally.

Licensees must maintain continuing education and renew their credentials by the June 30 deadline each year. When you call a landscaper, ask about their license type and number so you can look them up yourself. Doing so takes just a few minutes and gives you confidence that you're working with a qualified, registered business.
